Biography

Eddie Thornton (widely known as Tan Tan) was born in the late 40's in Spanish Town, Jamaica. At a young age he attended the Alpha Boys Catholic School. He graduated from the school as a trumpet player and began playing his first sessions with Eric Dean's All Star Band featuring Ruben Alexander, Roy Shirland (Shirley?) and Ernest Ranglin. They toured the island's night club spots playing cover versions of the then popular rhythm and blues which resulted in an engagement at the Colony Club, one of Jamaica's top night club.

 

Tan Tan also began playing at the Bournemouth Club with The Roy Coburn Band that featured artists such as Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Ossie Scott and Ray Coburn.

 

In the early 1965 Tan Tan went to England began playing Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames. He was playing on hits such as »Getaway«, »Yeah Yeah« and »Sitting In The Park«. By the end of the year he was back on the road as a member of a backing band touring extensively throughout England, Europe and the United States, alongside artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Sandi Shaw, The Small Faces and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He also became a part of the Tamla Motown Package Tour of England which featured heavyweight artists such as Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

 

Since 1965 Tan Tan has played on various studio sessions for artists such as Boney M, Aswad, Sugar Minott, Dennis Brown, Amazulu, King Sounds and the Israelites, Misty In Roots, Frankie Paul, Barrington Levy and many more.

 

In December 1984 Tan Tan toured Japan, America and the Caribbean as a part of Bunny Wailers backing.

 

In February of 1985 Eddie played on the British Reggae Famine Appeal (B.R.A.F.A.) record »Let's Make Africa Green Again« of which all the proceed went to Ethiopia through the Save The Children Fund.

 

In 1985 Tan Tan released a solo record called »Musical Nostalgia For Today« on the Maccabees label. It was a mix of jazz, rocksteady, ska and reggae. The album had been recorded in 1981 at Chalk Farm Studio.

 

In the 00's he worked with producer Ryan Moore of Twilight Circus, Lily Allen on her debut album, Super Furry Animals and 23 Skidoo.
