tracklists too or is this info available elsewhere?

Tim

maybe we could create another page just for the album- initially with just the tracklist but this would allow for a discussion or review of the album which we won't have space for within a discography... Daniel

I think that tracklisting can be too much. At least when listing them like this. However as Daniel some albums I can imagine will get their own pages with history and such. Seminal albums such as Yabby You's conquering lion. Tracklistings are also often very easy to find by just googling. /joakim kalcidis

This looks good. But what we have to decide is which is the best order. Because compilations can't have the year last while ordinaryalbyms have it at the second column. The best thing to do in my opinion is basically just structure the most important information first. For me that would be; Artist/artists (if necessary), Title of track/album, year, label, matrix, format. /joakim

Agreed. Maybe a country of origin too or maybe this could be incorporated in a comments section? - Tim

I like this one best I think. with jamaican issues it would be best to have the title first?

With UK issues it might be best to have catalogue number first? - Tim

I like this one best too. I would have thought that artist first would be better but maybe what you're saying makes more sense. If we have a different format for UK and Jamaican releases it could get too confusing... we could still order them by year or catalogue number, but that might be for another discussion... Daniel

I think there is a real difference between an artist discography and a label one. Thats not to say they should'nt be treated in a similar way where possible but they can't be exactly the same. The same with JA and UK label discographys - logic dictates that the UK ones should be listed by catalogue number but this is impossible with JA ones as the matrix frequently doesn't follow any similar logic.

I've no real preference of artist over title on Jamaican label discographys the redman one was done by song title but it could just as easily be by artist. More questions than answers i'm afraid. - Tim

This seems a bit too much to me. I done something similar on the Peter King discograpy (for 12"s) but I'm not very happy with the results. The producer info will be redundant for a label featuring 1 producer but I guess thats fairly obvious. Tim

When it comes to artist discogs or label discogs with only on artist/producer then it's fairly easy just to exclude the column with that info. The thing I don't like is that if you look on the Early B-disco where the separate artists don't have their own columns in the single-discog, it can be a bit confusing. I'd rather have it with too much info than too less /joakim

Yeah I can see that. I suspect part of the reason the peter king isn't clear is because I didn't label the columns. I'll change this. - Tim

This stuff is a trainspotters dream. I've tried to cover all the variations. Let me know what you think...Tim

Discussion

I'm a bit unsure about the different discog-tables for JA vs. UK 7". Even though I see a point with them I can imagine that they'll end up causing more confusion than help it. I'd rather have the same standard for all 7". Furthermore I'd personally prefer the year of release in front of the catalogue number since I think it's information that more important than the matrix/catalogue #. Otherwise I think these are great templates. /joakim

I've started a UK Prince Buster discograpy to test the differences. Personally I still prefer this as it's more logical to me but I can see the other side of it too and don't mind too much either way. I've a feeling when people start differnt discographys they won't necassarily follow the set format anyway and unless it's completely terrible there would be little point in changing it. Let me know what you think. Tim

That's true. Even though it's good to have a standard. I think that contributors want some sort of guide lines when it comes to these things. Regarding the matrixes they can still be the structural part of the list. Just that they don't come in the first columnt. Something like:

Just posted the twinkle disco. Forgot entirely about our discussion here. Sheesh :D I'll do it again later today and that time it will be the correct version!

/joakim

I did a change on the buster listing the singles by ascending cat #. Perhaps that is the best compromise of the two system to put both artist and cat # as the most important parts. /joakim

OK I see what you mean - yes this is fine with me. Enjoy changing the Twinkle Brothers discography ;-) I'll have to change the Parish one i did and a couple of others but at the moment I think I'd prefer to add more content. I can always return to that... Tim
