Tempo
History
Tempo is a reggae rhythm. The first release to feature the rhythm was Anthony Red Rose's song of the same name, »Tempo« (Firehouse 7"/12"). Production was by King Tubby who had at the time, the spring of 1985, just re-opened his studio. King Jammy's omnipotent digital rhythm, Sleng Teng had been released quite recently and this was Tubby's response. The rhythm was built with Casio CZ-1000 and Yamaha DX-100 keyboards and for the drums he used an Oberheim DX drum machine.
The title of the original cut (and thus also the rhythm) came from a misinterpretation of what Red Rose was singing on his song.
Temper, my God this ya sound in a temper! Woooah
Fever, my God this ya sound in a fever! Woooah
Temper was misheard and became Tempo.
Versions
The rhythm was immediately a major hit and sparked several cuts from not only Tubby but also Jammy. Noticeable versions are the original cut, the dub version, »Crank Angle Part 2« by King Asha and several more.
