Showcase

Description

A showcase album is usually an album with six songs on that have their dubs following. Six songs because of the vinyl format not allowing more music in without severely compromising the audio quality.

The showcase albums have their roots in the discomix 12", a format that was inspired by the American disco music releases in the 70's that used to have lengthier mixes of songs, often with an instrumental part mixed in seamless into the song. The 12" discomixes where designed for the DJ's so that they could stop the songs depending on when they felt it was appropriate rather than the songs length deciding it.

The Jamaican music industry has always been very single oriented, whether it is 7", 10" or 12". But the international market was often demanding albums rather than singles and Jamaica had to fill the demand. When music for an full album was available they released a full album, but when only a few songs had been recorded they producers then often chose to add also the dubs to the music or even the full extended mixes, thus making what would only have been half an album to a complete album. This was a very common format for an artist that had only recorded a few songs for a producer that didn't fill a whole album.

The first showcase albums in Jamaica surfaced in the late 70's along with the 12" discos.
