Shank I Sheck

History

The »Shank I Sheck« was originally recorded in 1964 by Baba Brooks and produced by King Edwards. The title of the song was a reference to the Chinese generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. The song was versioned a few times during the 70's but with the boom of the dancehall era in the late 70's and early 80's the rhythm had a renaissance with several songs using the rhythm. An album focused entirely on the rhythm was released by Tad's in 1982.

Versions

Shank I Sheck is one of the more known reggae rhythms being versioned several times from its first appearance to the present. Some of the better know versions are Bobby Ellis cut with the same name name from '76, Brigadier Jerry's »Gwaan A School« and Sugar Minott's »Dance Hall Style«.
