Reggae Quarterly

Page history last edited by bebth kingston 14 years, 2 months ago

Reggae Quarterly was a Canadian reggae magazine released by Beth Lesser and Dave Kingston. It started out as a small zine called »Live Good Today« devoted entirely to the works of Augustus Pablo, but on Augustus request they decided to cover the whole reggae industry of Jamaica (and in some instances also UK and Canada). The first issue was released in July, 1982 and it was followed by seven issues released from '83 and onwards on to '87 before Beth decided to stop producing it. Contrary to its name it never was a Quarterly.

The magazine gained quite a following due to the high-quality glossy printing, Beth's excellent photos of rare artists and the articles covering these artists (many that have never been featured anywhere else).

The production of Reggae Quarterly stopped for various reasons. One was because the introduction of cocaine and its effects on Jamaica, making the authors increasingly worried of visiting the island. Another reason was that Dave Kingston got a fulltime job and it was now much harder taking the time off to visit JA to gather material. Also the choice of starting a family made the work with a magazine impossible.

Portions of the magazine was included in the reissue of Beth's book on King Jammy.
