Real Rock

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 10 months ago

Real Rock is a reggae rhythm named after the original Studio One version recorded by the Sound Dimension band circa 1968.

After it's initial recording the rhythm was picked up occasionally by other artists and producers through the 70's (e.g Augustus pablo with El Rockers)until 78/79 when a flood of versions hit the market as it became a Sound System favourite. Notable versions from this time include Junior Murvin's "Cool Out Son" for Joe Gibbs and "Looking My Love" by Barrington Levy for Junjo Lawes.

Due to it's growing popularity the rhythm was revived by the Coxsone camp and found further success with Michigan & Smileys "Nice Up the Dance" and then the huge hit "Armagideon Time" by Willie Williams.

Real Rock has gone on to be one of the most popular rhythms of all time with nearly 300 versions at the last count(1).
