Ragga

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 10 months ago

The term Ragga (short for raggamuffin) was commonly used outside of Jamaica to describe digital dancehall music.

Dictionary.com gives the following definition of the word:

rag·a·muf·fin or rag·ga·muf·fin (rāg'ə-mŭf'ĭn) Pronunciation Key

n. A shabbily clothed, dirty child.

Raggamuffin blew big in 1985 with the song »Under Me Sleng Teng« that was produced by Wayne Smith and Noel Dailey on Noels Casio keyboard. The song was released by King Jammy and with the instantly recognizable bass-line the song became an instant dancehall classic spawning hundreds of versions.

The term Ragga was widely used in the UK in the early 90's though by the start of the 21st Century the more catchall term Dancehall has reaserted itself.
