Papa Finnigan and Junior Ranking

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 1 month ago

Papa Finnigan (b. Steve Earl Kelly, 11th of June, 1963, Greenwich Town Farm, Kingston) and Junior Ranking (b. Jr. Desmond Williams Dec 30th, 1961 at Jubilee Hospital) met at Tivoli Comprehensive High School but went different ways after. Finnigan (also the younger brother of Papa Michigan) went to Kingston Technical School and Jr. Ranking to Excelsior High School. They were at this time deejaying separately. In 1978-1979 they started deejaying together and by 1980 they had their first hit single »Two The Hard Way« for Winston Riley at Channel One. They cut »Guiding Star« for High Times in 1981. At this time they both decided to leave school in order to focus entirely on their music career.

They were at the time working with sound systems such as Echo Vibration, Osibisa, Gemini, Jack Ruby, Black Star, Virgo, Metromedia among others. In 1982 they teamed up with produced Benbow (b. Anthony Basil Creary) who gave them their biggest hit »Youthman Prophecy« (Classic label) to date - a single that stirred up some controversy due to its political statements. In 1983 followed an album, Two The Hard Way, for the Heartbeat label with productions by Benbow and bass players Cristopher Meredith.

They later on also released a record on the Ayeola label called Easy We Easy (AYLP001).
