Metro Downbeat Sound System was formed by Percival Miller who emigrated to the UK from Jamaica in 1958. He started the system shortly after arriving in the UK.

There was also a Metro Downbeat op[erating in the mid 80's . They had a Sunday night residency at Mingles Night Spot in Hackney, East London in 1985. It is assumed this was a different system.
