Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 5 months ago

Linval Thompson was born in the Waltham Park area, Kingston 13 on October 2 1954. He lived with his father in JA studying at Maxfield Park school and then Melrose and Kingsway High School. In 1971 he left with his father to live in America, where his mother already was staying. He only stayed there for a year to a year and a half. While in New York he formed a band with Horace Andy doing some minor shows. He also recorded his first song whilst in America, "There Is No Other Woman" which was self produced in a studio in Brooklyn, New York.

Circa 1972-73 he moved back to Jamaica where he was recorded by Stamma Hobson in '74. The song gathered interest with Phil Pratt who then produced the song »Jah Jah Dreader Than Dread« (later cutting it for himself also). After Phil Pratt he was produced by Lee Perry releasing the song »Kung Fu Man« and another song. It was with Bunny Lee he had his first major hit with the song »Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks« (released in '75).

In 1976 Bunny Lee released an album with Linval called »Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks« (later to be reissued by Blood & Fire).

After working with Bunny he started to produce himself with major hits such as Train To Zion ('77) released on the Socialist Roots label. The 12" is regarded as one of the first if not the first 12" disco to be released in Jamaica. Later followed an album with the same name. Material for a second album was recorded but never released.

In 1978 Linval released one of his most known track »I Love Marijuana« it also featured production credits by a Henry Lawes later to be known as Junjo. The same year also saw the first release from Linval on the Burning Sounds imprint. Several self produced albums would follow. Also productions for other artists such as Ranking Dread, Mystic Eyes (featuring Anthony Johnson as lead singer) and Al Campbell were released on the label (and its different imprints).

During the late 70's and early 80's Linval produced a string of albums featuring artists such as the deejays Big Joe, Bunny Lion, Prince Mohammed and singers such as Barrington Levy, Viceroys and himself.

He also recorded with Freddy McKay. Even though there was material for an album it never was released.

In 2005 Linval released an acoustic album for the French Makasound label featuring covers of his classic material.
