Direct Drive Soul Sound

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 5 months ago

Direct Drive Soul Sound was a UK based sound system that originated from Hackney, East London. The sound was primarily known for playing Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and Rare Grooves but they also specialised in Lovers Rock, Revival Reggae and Roots. The sound was formed in 1983 by DJ Starskii (b. Ronnie Charles-Adrien), Lion (b. Robbie Isaac), Yifter (b. Gary Fennell), Trevor English, Kevin Golbourne, the Campbell brothers Terry and Colin.

Kevin Golbourne left the sound in 1984 to join the Mad Hatters Sound which was fronted by Trevor Nelson. Keith Watson joined the sound in 1984, Andy Leatham and Ivan Lowe joined the sound in 1986 replacing the Campbell brothers.

The sound had a residency on Thursday and Friday nights at the Nightmoves niteclub in Shoreditch, East London in 1985-86. The sound continued playing throughout the 90's and still plays out occasionally at revival dances and selective functions.
