Ali Baba

History

In 1969(1) Duke Reid produced the smash hit »Ali Baba« for John Holt, this was the first cut of the rhythm - it was released on Treasure Isle. In 1975 Bunny Lee recut the song for singer Jackie Edwards. The rhythm track formed the basis for a myriad of new cuts on it often focusing on a war between the dreadlocks and the barber. One of the most known cuts on the rhythm is [Dr. Alimantado|Dr. Alimantado's] »I Killed The Barber« that was later followed by »The Barber Feel It« a joint effort between the Doctor and Jah Stitch where they ride around town and laugh at every barber shop they run across.

Versions

Several versions followed in '75 to '76 on the Bunny Lee production. Notable mentions are »Poor Barber« by Dirty Harry featuring loads of gunshots, Joseph Cottons cut with the same title as the rhythm that starts on a heavily pitched down version of the rhythm that latter picks up the pace.

In 1998 followed recut of the rhythm with artists such as Marcia Griffiths, Al Campbell, George Nooks, Glen Washington and many more.
